Josh Edge: The Remote That Finally Makes a Smart Home Phone-Free

Smart Home 5 min read

Every smart home we finish has the same last-mile problem: the system is brilliant from a phone, and nobody wants to find their phone to turn the lights down. The Josh Edge is Josh.ai’s answer, a milled-aluminum handheld with six programmable buttons, a full media pad and a tap-to-talk microphone. We have been putting it in Wasatch Back homes for a year now, and it has quietly become the remote clients reach for first. Here is what it is, shown in motion, and where it earns its place.

Premium by design

Most home-control remotes are plastic, and they feel like it next to a Lutron keypad or a good pair of speakers. Edge is different in the hand. Josh.ai machines the body from a solid aluminum billet, and the rest of the hardware follows the same standard: wireless Qi charging on the included base so there is never a dead remote at movie time, and an IPX4 splash rating so it lives comfortably in a kitchen, a bathroom or on a covered patio.

Simply smarter

The layout is the reason guests and grandparents can use it without a lesson. The bottom half is a universal remote: navigation pad, transport controls, volume and channel. The top six buttons are the smart-home half, and each one is programmed per room to a device or a scene. In a theater that might be Lights, Shades, Movie, Sports, Pause Everything and Goodnight. In a primary bedroom it is a different six. The remote knows which room it lives in.

The microphone button is the multiplier

Six buttons cover the things a room does every day. Everything else is one press away by voice: “set the great room to 70,” “turn off the lights in the kids’ rooms,” “what time does the Jazz game start?” Because Edge talks to the Josh processor in the house rather than to a cloud speaker, the command runs locally and the microphone only listens when the button is held. That is the difference between voice control clients trust and voice control they unplug. It is also how the rules Josh.ai published last week get enforced in practice.

Set up in the Josh app, not in code

Map the layout, assign each button, adjust settings. We do it on the walkthrough, and you can change it later. Video: Josh.ai.

Button mapping happens in the Josh app with drag-and-drop tools, and the button caps themselves are swappable from an included pack, so the icon on the remote matches what the button does. When your Sunday changes from football to a movie, the remote changes with it. No programmer visit, no charge.

Designed to feel at home

Installers are a hard crowd to impress and the field reviews are unusually warm. One long-time integrator called it the best universal remote he has ever held. Another noted that within a few days it became the most popular remote in his own house. That matches what we hear from clients: it is the one remote that does not get lost in the couch, because it goes back on the base.

Where we put Josh Edge in a Utah home

  • The theater or media room. One remote for the projector, the receiver, the shades, the lights and the Josh scenes. The backlighting is what makes it work in the dark.
  • The primary bedroom. Goodnight, Wake, reading lights, shades, and the TV, from the nightstand. This is where the phone-free argument wins every time.
  • The kitchen and covered patio. IPX4 splash rating and a base that keeps it charged. Music, patio lights, the outdoor TV, the fire feature.
  • Guest suites and second homes. A Park City rental or a guest wing gets a remote that needs no app, no account and no explanation.

What it needs

Josh Edge is a controller for a Josh.ai system, not a standalone gadget. It requires a Josh Core or Josh One processor, a Josh.ai software license, and a properly built home network with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 coverage in the rooms where it lives. It ships with the remote, a six-button cap pack, the charging base and a USB-C cable. If your home already runs Control4, Crestron or Lutron, Josh layers on top of those systems rather than replacing them, which is how we usually deploy it.

Already have Josh.ai? Edge is a same-day add. We map the buttons on site, pair it to the room, and swap the caps. If you are planning a new home, we pre-wire a charging base location in the theater, the primary bedroom and the kitchen as standard. Not sure how many remotes and microphones your house needs? Our Josh.ai System Designer drafts it in two minutes.

Josh Edge is at its best when the lighting behind it is Lutron. We are a Lutron dealer in Utah, so the keypads, the shades and the Josh remote get programmed by the same crew — and the Park City home theater on the other end of “movie time” is usually ours too.
