Josh.ai vs. Control4 & Crestron: How They Actually Relate (and How We Choose)

If you’re building or upgrading a luxury home, someone has probably asked you to pick a “brain” for it — Josh.ai, Control4, or Crestron. It gets framed as a rivalry, and it mostly isn’t one. The more useful question isn’t which brand wins — it’s how you want to live with your system, and, honestly, who gets to make the small changes once you’ve moved in.

They’re not really competitors

Here’s the part that surprises people: Josh.ai can run a whole home on its own, and it can also sit on top of a Control4 or Crestron system. The Josh Core controller manages security, cameras, lighting, shades, climate, locks, audio and TV — hundreds of devices — with native integrations to Lutron, Sonos and more. But when a home already has Control4, or needs its deeper automation, Josh layers over it: Control4 stays the backbone, and Josh becomes the voice, touch and text interface, automatically picking up everything the Control4 project already controls. Josh.ai and Control4 are, in fact, partners — so this isn’t a cage match. It’s a set of choices.

What Josh.ai is great at

  • Voice-first, by design. Josh was built around natural language from the start — “we’re watching a movie” just works — and its new AI X OS lets you build automations by simply describing them.
  • You make the everyday changes. Rename a scene, adjust a routine, tune the home — without waiting on a dealer.
  • It updates itself. Improvements arrive over the air, not on a truck.
  • Privacy as architecture. Local processing and a real microphone kill-switch, not an ad-driven cloud speaker.

What Control4 and Crestron are great at

Credit where it’s due — these are powerful, mature platforms. Control4 has one of the broadest integration libraries in the industry, so it can talk to niche and legacy gear that newer systems can’t always reach. Crestron is the tool for ultra-custom estates that need essentially limitless, bespoke programming — if you can imagine it, a Crestron programmer can build it. For the right project, either is an excellent choice, and we design and install both.

The real difference: who makes the changes

This is where it matters for how you’ll actually feel about your home. Traditional dealer-programmed systems — Control4, Crestron, Savant — are configured with dealer-only software. That’s wonderful for deep customization, but it means many everyday changes (adding a device, reworking a room, changing the on-screen interface) run through a dealer, on a service visit. Keeping a Crestron system serviced commonly runs $1,000–$3,000+ a year. A Josh-led home flips that: you handle the small stuff yourself, and the system improves on its own.

Neither model is “wrong.” It’s a real trade-off — bespoke depth and breadth on one side, self-service and lower cost of ownership on the other — and it belongs in your decision right alongside the feature list.

So we build it three ways

  • Josh.ai, standalone. For most luxury homes, Josh Core runs the house with Lutron, Sonos and the rest — a clean, self-service experience with no surprise service calls.
  • Josh.ai on Control4. When a home needs Control4’s depth, or already has it, we keep that backbone and put Josh on top for a far better day-to-day interface.
  • Control4 or Crestron, done right. When a project genuinely calls for bespoke programming or the widest integration reach, we build it — with you clear-eyed about the ownership model.

How we’d choose with you

We start from how you want to live in the home, not from a brand. For most of our clients that points to an open, Josh-led system — because being able to change a scene or hang a new TV without booking an appointment is simply a better way to own a house. When a project needs Control4 or Crestron, we’ll say so plainly and build it beautifully. Either way, the best time to decide is early, during pre-wire. Tell us about your project and we’ll help you choose the brain your home should actually have.

Whichever brain you choose, the rooms are the same: see how we approach a Park City home theater, and what Josh.ai installed and programmed by a Utah dealer looks like in a finished home.
