One good lock, properly fitted and properly set up. For a lot of homes this is genuinely all that’s needed.

A relay wires into the opener’s wall-button terminals and triggers it exactly as the button does. Because that’s all it needs, it works with essentially any opener — including the one that’s been on your ceiling for twenty years.

When the motor is due anyway

If the opener is being replaced, buy one with the intelligence already in it. Chamberlain and LiftMaster use myQ; Genie has Aladdin Connect. Both are good, and both are tied to their own brand of opener.

Either way you get the same three things: the door’s real state on your phone, an alert when it’s been open too long, and the ability to close it from wherever you are — which is usually halfway down the canyon.
