How to Change Door Chimes on an IQ Panel 4 or IQ Panel 5 (Per-Sensor Sounds and Voice)
The back door chimes every time it opens and the front door says nothing. Nothing is broken. On a Qolsys IQ Panel 4 or IQ Panel 5, chimes are set per sensor: every door and window has its own sound, its own spoken name, or silence, and whoever programmed the system left that one quiet. This is the exact menu path to give a door a chime, change the sound, turn on the voice announcement, or silence the pantry door that is driving you crazy. It takes two minutes at the panel and your master code, and the menus are the same on both panels.
- The path. Swipe down → Settings → Advanced Settings → master code → Sound → Edit Chimes. No installer code needed.
- Per sensor. Each door, window and motion has its own chime sound and its own Voice toggle. Chime, voice, both or neither.
- Three places a chime can be muted. The sensor’s own setting, the Sensor Chimes master switch under Chime Settings, and the Chime volume slider. Check all three.
- Panel only, as of October 2026. Chime sounds are configured on the touchscreen, not in the Alarm.com app.
- Chimes play while disarmed. Once armed, an opening door starts an entry delay or an alarm instead.
Where the chime settings live
- Swipe down from the top of the panel screen to open the menu.
- Tap Settings, then Advanced Settings.
- Enter your master code, the same code you disarm with. You do not need the installer code for anything in this post.
- Tap Sound.
The Sound menu is longer than it looks. Volume sliders sit at the top, and the chime controls are further down under Edit Chimes, Voice Settings and Chime Settings. On the IQ Panel 5 the volume section breaks out voice, beeps, chime, media and doorbell separately, which matters later.
Give a door its chime, or change the sound
- Tap Edit Chimes. Every sensor on the system is listed by name.
- Find the quiet one, say Front Door, and tap the pencil icon next to it.
- Pick a sound from the dropdown. The list runs from classic ding-dongs to short beeps, and it includes None, which is why your door was silent in the first place.
- Tap Play to hear it out loud before you commit.
- Tap Save.
The same screen has a Voice option per sensor. Turn it on and the panel speaks the sensor’s name when it opens: “front door.” We set voice on exterior doors for most families with kids, because “garage entry” from the kitchen tells you more than a tone does. The trick works in reverse too: a pantry or a bathroom door that chimes forty times a day gets set to None.
If nothing chimes at all
Scroll to Chime Settings in the same Sound menu. The master switches live there. If Sensor Chimes is unchecked, the panel stays silent no matter what each sensor says. Check it and the individual chimes come back. The same section holds the panel’s own chimes and the activity-sensor chimes, so a motion detector in a hallway can announce itself too, which is useful for an elderly parent’s room and annoying everywhere else.
Still silent? Go back to the top of the Sound menu and look at the Chime volume slider. It is separate from voice and beep volume, and it is the one that gets zeroed by accident when someone tries to quiet the panel at night. Voice announcements have their own global switch under Voice Settings, so if the tone plays and the name does not, that is where to look.
Gotchas we see on Utah takeovers
Chimes set, still silent on one door. Check that the sensor actually reports. Open the door and watch the sensor list on the home screen; if it never shows Open, the chime is not the problem, the sensor is. Trouble beeps are a different sound and a different fix.
New sensors come with a default. Add a door later and it arrives with a standard chime. Same menu to change or silence it.
Secondary keypads. If you have an IQ Remote in the basement or the primary bedroom, its loudness is set on its own screen, not from the main panel. Which sensors chime is still decided here.
Doorbell versus door chime. If you have an Alarm.com video doorbell, its ring on the panel is the doorbell volume, not the sensor chime. Two sliders, two sounds.
Frequently asked
Can I change chimes from the Alarm.com app? Not as of October 2026. The app arms, disarms, automates and notifies, but per-sensor chime sounds and voice announcements are configured on the touchscreen itself.
Is the IQ Panel 5 menu different? Same path and same per-sensor controls. The IQ Panel 5 splits the volume sliders a little finer, and that is the only thing you will notice.
Do chimes work while the system is armed? No. A chime is a courtesy announcement while disarmed. When armed, an opening door starts the entry delay or trips the alarm, which is the security feature.
Can a motion detector chime? Yes, through the activity-sensor chimes under Chime Settings. Use it sparingly.
I do not know my master code. If it is still a default from an old installer, change it. If nobody knows it, the installer code can reset it, which is a service call.
