Josh.ai + Lutron: The Pairing That Runs the Whole House by Voice

Ask us to name the single best pairing in home automation and it is not close: Josh.ai for the voice, Lutron for the lighting. Each is the best at its job, and together they behave like one system that happens to carry two logos. Lutron owns the physical layer of light, from dimmers that never flicker to keypads and shades that move silently on schedule. What Lutron does not do is conversation, and that is exactly the gap Josh fills. Here is what the pairing looks like in a home we have wired in Utah, what hardware it takes, and why the programming is the real product.
- Keypads for the scenes you use daily, voice for everything else. A Palladiom keypad covers the seven scenes a room lives by; Josh covers the infinite requests outside them, with no phone fishing.
- Josh speaks fluent Lutron. Dimmers, keypads, fans, Ketra color and Sivoia shades, on HomeWorks QSX and RadioRA 3, with rooms and groups understood.
- There is a keypad with the microphone built in. Josh.ai’s voice-integrated keypad puts a Josh microphone in a Palladiom or Claro faceplate, so the wall shows one elegant plate instead of two devices.
- Programming is the product. Room names, scene tuning and sun-following shade groups are what make it feel inevitable rather than like a demo.
- It needs a real network. Voice that lags is voice you stop using. Our Josh projects ride on wired UniFi.
Why this pairing specifically
Lutron’s app is excellent and its keypads are close to perfect for the handful of scenes a room uses every day. The moment you want something outside the preset, you are back to a phone. Josh fills exactly that gap. It understands rooms, groups and context, so “a little warmer in here” shifts the lighting scene without anyone naming a percentage, and “turn off everything downstairs except the kitchen” is one sentence. The two companies are close partners, Josh.ai builds a dedicated Lutron page and product line, and it shows in how little glue an installer needs between them.

What daily life sounds like
- “Josh, movie time.” Theater lights ramp to 10 percent, hallway sconces to 30, shades drop, and the AV wakes up.
- “A little warmer in here.” The scene shifts tone. Nobody says a number.
- “Draw the sheers halfway.” Sivoia QS shades move to 50 percent, in that room only, because the microphone knows where it is.
- “Goodnight, and wake me at six.” Lights off room by room, shades sealed, alarm set, timer scheduled. Josh handles compound commands in one breath.
- Guests just talk. No app downloads, no keypad tour, no “the switch is behind the door.”
The hardware on the wall and in the rack
A Josh + Lutron home has three layers, and we install all three.
- The Lutron system. For a custom build or serious remodel that means HomeWorks QSX, with Palladiom keypads, Ketra where color matters and Sivoia QS shades. For a wireless retrofit it means RadioRA 3, which Josh controls just as well. Both are covered on our Lutron page and lighting and shades overview.
- The Josh system. Josh Core in the rack, Josh Nano microphones flush in the ceilings or walls of the main rooms, and a Josh Micro on a nightstand or kitchen counter where you want a built-in speaker and a touch dial. Nano has no speaker and needs Core; it answers through the room’s Sonos or architectural speakers.
- The keypad that does both. Josh.ai’s voice-integrated keypad places a Josh microphone in the same faceplate as the Lutron buttons. It comes in Palladiom Metal (Satin Nickel, Polished Graphite) and Claro (Snow White, Midnight), with Palladiom Matte finishes listed as coming soon, and Josh.ai states it works with all Lutron systems. It is a single plate on the wall for curated control by button and open-ended control by voice.

The part people underestimate: programming
The magic is not the boxes. Both brands sell through professionals because the result depends on design. On our projects the programming pass includes:
- Room naming that matches how your family talks. If the kids call it “the loft,” Josh calls it the loft. Aliases cost nothing and save a hundred failed requests.
- Scenes tuned to real evenings. We set levels in the room at night, with you, not from a spreadsheet.
- Shade groups that follow the sun on your lot. West-facing glass in Draper and Heber behaves differently from a north-facing wall; the groups and schedules reflect that.
- Keypad engraving that agrees with the voice names. The button says “Dinner,” the scene is called Dinner, and Josh knows “dinner lights” means the same thing.
This is why a Josh + Lutron home from a good integrator feels inevitable and a self-assembled one feels like a demo. If you are new to Josh, start with what Josh.ai actually does.
Where it fits, and where it does not
This pairing shines from serious remodel on up: whole-home RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks territory, usually alongside shades and distributed audio. For a couple of rooms of smart bulbs it is the wrong tool and we will tell you so. And it needs a real network underneath. Josh processes voice locally, but the microphones, the Core and the Lutron processor talk constantly, and a consumer mesh system adds exactly the latency that makes people stop using voice. Our Josh projects ride on wired UniFi backbones, ideally planned at pre-wire.
Frequently asked
Do I still need keypads if I have Josh? Yes, and you will want them. A keypad is the fastest way to hit the scene you use every night; voice is for everything else. The voice-integrated keypad gives you both in one plate.
Does Josh work with RadioRA 3 or only HomeWorks? Both. Josh.ai lists the voice-integrated keypad as compatible with all Lutron systems.
Can Josh control my Lutron shades? Yes. Open, close, percentages, and groups (“close the west shades”) on Sivoia QS and Lutron wireless shades. The October 2026 release also added PowerShades for homes that use them.
Will Josh change my Lutron programming? No. Lutron keeps its own scenes and schedules; Josh reads the device list and adds a voice layer on top. If Josh went away tomorrow, every keypad would still work.
What if I already have a Lutron system? That is the easiest version of the project. We add Core, the microphones and the programming pass without touching your dimmers.
