Alarm.com Fire Communicator: Commercial Fire Monitoring, Modernized

There’s a quiet problem sitting inside a lot of Utah commercial buildings: the fire alarm panel is still reporting to the monitoring station over a copper phone line — the same POTS lines the carriers are actively retiring, at rising cost and falling reliability. In July 2026 Alarm.com moved to fix exactly that, launching the Fire Communicator (ADC-FC100) and stepping into commercial fire for the first time. It’s the piece that finally brings fire monitoring onto the same modern platform your security, cameras and access control already run on.

The problem: the phone line your fire alarm leans on is disappearing

For decades, commercial fire panels have dialed out over analog POTS lines. Since the FCC cleared the way for carriers to retire copper, those lines have been going away nationwide — and where they still exist, they’re increasingly expensive, single-path, and quietly failing more often than anyone would like. Many buildings are now paying a premium for a connection that’s actively deteriorating.

That’s not just a billing annoyance. A fire system that can’t reliably reach the monitoring station is a compliance problem and a life-safety problem at the same time — and it’s exactly the kind of thing that surfaces at the worst moment, during an inspection or an actual event. The Fire Communicator replaces that aging link with something built for how buildings actually connect today.

What the Fire Communicator does

  • Dual-path signaling that stays up. It reports over Broadband and LTE, so if one path is interrupted the other carries the signal — and dual-SIM lets it switch carriers automatically for the strongest connection. No single wire to cut, no single point of failure.
  • It works with the panel you already have. The communicator connects to new or existing fire alarm control panels through the phone-line terminals or relay outputs — so modernizing the communication path doesn’t mean ripping out and replacing the whole system.
  • Built to code. It’s UL 864 Listed, NFPA 72 compliant, and certified by CSFM, LAFD and FDNY — the certifications that matter when an inspector, an AHJ or an insurer is asking. It also earned a 2026 ESX Innovation Award for life-safety systems.
  • Alerts to the station and to your people. Fire events transmit to the central monitoring station and push notifications to the right team members through the Alarm.com app — so nobody’s waiting on a phone tree to find out something happened.

One platform: intrusion, video, access — and now fire

The bigger shift isn’t the device, it’s where fire finally lives. Until now, commercial fire was almost always a separate silo — its own communicator, its own reports, its own login nobody checked. The Fire Communicator puts fire into the same Alarm.com platform that already runs your intrusion alarm, video and access control.

In practice that means one app, one set of alerts, and one history to pull from — instead of four systems that don’t talk to each other. For a property manager or a multi-site operator, it also means every building’s fire status reports into the same dashboard, wherever you are, with automated reporting instead of a clipboard.

Is your building affected?

If any of these describe you, this is worth a conversation now rather than after a failure:

  • Your fire panel still communicates over a copper phone/POTS line (or you’re getting notices that the line is being discontinued or repriced)
  • You manage offices, retail, restaurants, warehouses, medical or dental suites, schools, or multi-tenant commercial space with a monitored fire alarm
  • You run multiple locations and want fire status for all of them in one place
  • You’re planning a new commercial build or remodel and want fire specced on a modern, code-compliant path from day one

How the upgrade actually works

It’s more straightforward than most owners expect. We audit your existing fire alarm control panel and its current communication path, connect the Fire Communicator to the panel through its phone-line terminals or relay outputs, and bring it online with dual-path Broadband + LTE reporting to the monitoring station. Your existing panel and devices stay in place — we’re modernizing how it communicates, not tearing out the system — and it all rides on a network we can design and support too.

Shield installs and monitors it

We’re a commercial Alarm.com dealer, and the Fire Communicator fits right into how we already build systems for Utah businesses — monitored fire and burglary, cameras, access control and the network underneath it, all from one licensed local crew. If your building is still on a copper line, or you’re speccing fire for a new project, we’ll audit what you have and put fire monitoring on the same modern platform as the rest of the property. See our commercial work, or get in touch and we’ll take a look.
