Here’s the comparison we walk through with clients, with the tradeoffs the fan forums on either side won’t give you.

Two different philosophies

UniFi Protect is local-first: your cameras record to an NVR in your house, no monthly fees, stunning image quality per dollar, and total ownership of your footage. Alarm.com video is service-first: cameras that live inside the same app, rules and professional monitoring as your alarm system, with cloud clips, cellular backup and analytics tuned for security events rather than surveillance hobbyism.

Our rule of thumb after hundreds of installs: Alarm.com video for the security layer, Protect for the surveillance layer. A typical premium home gets doorbell + entry cameras on Alarm.com (armed with the system, monitored, cellular-backed) — and if the client wants continuous 4K coverage of the driveway, shop, yard or a business, that’s Protect on its own NVR. They coexist happily; we wire both onto the same UniFi backbone constantly.

The bottom line

If you want cameras as part of a monitored security system, Alarm.com. If you want maximum footage, quality and ownership with no monthly cost, Protect. If the honest answer is “both,” that’s not a sales trick — it’s how we do our own buildings. Somewhere around 4,000 square feet, the friendly consumer mesh kits stop being honest with you. We get the call every week: an eero or Orbi system that was “fine for a while,” then came the dead office, the buffering theater, the doorbell that drops every third visitor. Here’s the straight version of when mesh is enough, and when a Utah-sized house needs UniFi.

Why mesh struggles in big houses

Consumer mesh nodes talk to each other over the same radio waves they serve your devices with. Every wireless “hop” between nodes cuts real-world throughput — often in half — and adds latency. In a 2,000 sq ft rambler with two nodes, nobody notices. In a 6,000 sq ft two-story with stucco, in-floor heat and a theater in the basement, the physics stop cooperating: three or four hops, brick and tile in the walls, forty-plus devices fighting for airtime.

Mesh vendors solve this the only way they can — more nodes — which makes the hop problem worse, not better.

What changes with UniFi

When mesh is genuinely fine

Under ~3,000 square feet, mostly-open floor plan, no theater pulling 4K streams, no home office living on video calls — a good mesh kit is a perfectly rational choice, and we say so in walkthroughs. The eero in your townhouse is not a problem we need to solve.

The Utah wrinkle

Homes here fight WiFi harder than the spec sheets assume: stucco over wire lath, basements that are half the square footage, three-car garages where the EV charger and the shop live, and backyards that expect coverage to the fire pit. That’s not a “more nodes” problem. It’s a design problem — heat-map, cable, mount, tune.

There is exactly one moment in a build when running cable is nearly free, and it lasts about a week. Before insulation and drywall, a cable run is a person with a spool walking between open studs. Afterwards it is fishing walls, cutting access holes, patching, texturing and repainting — and the same run costs ten times as much, assuming it is possible at all.

Almost every expensive retrofit we are called out to in Utah traces back to that week. Here is what to put in during it, roughly in order of how much you will regret skipping it.

The short version

  • Cable is the cheap part. Labour while the walls are open is minutes; afterwards it is a half-day and a painter.
  • Two Cat6 drops per TV, one per ceiling access point, one per camera position, one per exterior door.
  • Give the equipment a home: an enclosure with power and ventilation, somewhere you can stand up.
  • Recessed door contacts and door-strike wiring while the frames are open.
  • Run conduit to the attic and the crawl space. It makes every future addition an hour instead of a project.

Run more Cat6 than you think you need

If you take one thing from this: cable is the cheap part. The material cost of a run is a few dollars. The labour, while the walls are open, is minutes. Adding one later is a half-day job and a painter.

Give the equipment somewhere to live

The single most common mistake in a new build is running the cable beautifully and then having nowhere to land it. A structured wiring enclosure in a closet, garage or mechanical room — with power in it and some ventilation — is what turns a pile of cable into a system.

What ends up in there: the network switch, the router, the camera recorder, the alarm panel, the access controller. That is a real amount of heat and a real amount of noise, which is why it belongs in a closet and not behind the television.

Ask for a dedicated circuit. Ask for it to be somewhere you can stand up. And ask for it to be somewhere that is not going to be full of coats within a year.

The one we get called about most: beautiful cable runs terminating at a blank wall with no power. The enclosure needs a dedicated circuit and somewhere for the heat to go — a switch, a recorder and an alarm panel in a sealed cupboard will cook. Decide where it lives before the electrician is finished, not after.

Doors and windows, before insulation

Wireless sensors are good now, and there is nothing wrong with them. But two things are much better done in the wall:

Also worth a conduit while you are at it: a length of smurf tube from the enclosure to the attic and another to a crawl space or basement. That single detail is what makes every future addition a one-hour job instead of a project.

The outside of the house

Camera positions want thinking about before the soffit goes up, because the good positions are all high and none of them are reachable later.

The rule that matters: cameras belong at pinch points, not at corners of the property. A camera watching the front door, the driveway entrance and the side gate will do more than six cameras surveying open lawn. Fewer, better-placed, lower down than instinct suggests — a camera at eight to ten feet gets a usable face; one at the roofline gets the top of a hat.

Run cable to more positions than you will use on day one. An unused cable coiled in a soffit costs nothing. A new one costs a lift and a painter.

Two things people forget

A cellular path for the alarm. If the alarm reports over broadband only, then the internet is a single point of failure for the one system whose entire job is to work when things go wrong. A cellular communicator is the fix and it is much easier to plan for than to add.

Where the internet actually enters the building. On rural and canyon properties in Utah this is often the whole problem — the service comes in at the wrong end, or does not come in at all. If you are building somewhere that fibre has not reached, decide early, because a satellite install has mounting and cable-path implications the framer needs to know about.

What this costs you to get right

Substantially less than getting it wrong. Pre-wire on a typical home is a day or two of labour and a few hundred dollars of cable. The same capability retrofitted, two years later, runs into the thousands and involves your walls.
